The Canada Car Program is Car Loan Canada’s online auto-financing service. A bank looks at one credit file and gives one answer. We send your application to a network of Canadian lenders, including prime lenders, credit unions, subprime auto lenders and dealership finance partners, so that you see the financing options you actually qualify for.
Important: the Canada Car Program is a private car-loan matching service. It is not a federal or provincial government grant or rebate. If you are looking for government incentives on electric vehicles, check the Government of Canada and your provincial government’s websites. You may be able to combine those incentives with the financing you get through us.
Who the Canada Car Program Is For
- Bad credit borrowers: a credit score under 600, missed payments or collections
- No credit history: students, young drivers and first-time buyers
- Newcomers to Canada: permanent residents and work-permit holders with Canadian income
- Bankruptcy or consumer proposal: including people still in an active proposal
- Self-employed and gig workers: rideshare and delivery drivers, contractors, and seasonal workers
- Good credit borrowers: people who want competitive rates without visiting several banks
How the Canada Car Program Works (3 Steps)
- Apply online in about 60 seconds. Tell us your name, province, income and the type of vehicle you want. This is a soft inquiry, so your credit score is not affected.
- Get matched and pre-approved. We match your profile with lenders and dealers near you. Many applicants hear back the same day with a pre-approval amount and an estimated payment.
- Choose your vehicle and drive away. Pick a new or used car, truck, SUV or van that fits your approval, sign your loan documents, and get on the road. Often this takes 24 to 48 hours.
Canada Car Program Eligibility Requirements
Every lender sets its own rules, but most applicants qualify if they meet these requirements:
- You have reached the age of majority in your province (18 or 19)
- You live in Canada and have a valid driver’s licence
- You have steady income, usually $1,800+ per month before tax, from employment, self-employment, a pension, or government benefits like CCB or CPP (requirements vary by lender)
- You can show proof of income (pay stubs, bank statements or a Notice of Assessment) and proof of address
There is no minimum credit score to apply. Your income, job stability and debt-to-income ratio often matter as much as your score.
Car Loan Rates Through the Canada Car Program
Your interest rate depends mainly on your credit, the vehicle’s age and mileage, the loan term, and your down payment. The table below shows typical ranges seen in the Canadian market. They are estimates for illustration only and are not a rate offer.
| Credit profile | Typical APR range | Common terms |
|---|---|---|
| Excellent (720+) | About 6% – 9% | 36 – 84 months |
| Good (660 – 719) | About 8% – 12% | 36 – 84 months |
| Fair (600 – 659) | About 11% – 18% | 36 – 84 months |
| Bad / rebuilding (under 600) | About 15% – 29.99% | 36 – 72 months |
To lower your rate, make a bigger down payment, choose a newer used vehicle, add a co-signer, or pick a shorter term. Read more in our guide to car loan interest rates in Canada.
Canada Car Program for Bad Credit
Most of our applicants come to us for bad credit financing. Subprime auto lenders put more weight on your current income and stability than on old credit problems. Making on-time payments on a car loan also gets reported to Equifax and TransUnion, so your car loan can help rebuild your credit score. To boost your approval odds:
- Budget so your total car costs stay under about 15% – 20% of your take-home pay
- Put money down, even $500 – $1,000 helps
- Choose a reliable used vehicle instead of a brand-new one
- Have your proof of income and address ready

Canada Car Program for Newcomers and No Credit
Newcomers often have income but no Canadian credit history. Several lenders in our network have newcomer programs that accept a work permit or PR card, an employment letter, and a down payment in place of credit history. If you have never had credit, see no credit car loans in Canada.

Canada Car Program FAQ
Is the Canada Car Program a government program?
No. It is a private car-loan matching service run by Car Loan Canada. It connects you with lenders and dealers and does not provide government grants or rebates.
Does applying affect my credit score?
No. The first application uses a soft check, so it does not affect your score. A lender only does a full credit check once you decide to go ahead with a specific offer.
Can I get approved with bad credit or after a consumer proposal?
Yes. Our network includes lenders that specialize in bad credit, bankruptcy and consumer proposal auto loans. Approval is based mostly on your income and stability.
How fast can I get a car through the Canada Car Program?
Many applicants are pre-approved the same day and drive away within 24 to 48 hours once they choose a vehicle and provide their documents.
Do I need a down payment?
Not always. Many approvals need $0 down, but a down payment can lower your rate and your monthly payment.
Is there a fee to apply?
No. Applying through the Canada Car Program is free, and you don’t have to accept any offer.
